In 2023, ten emerging technologies were released, and generative artificial intelligence was listed.
The 14th Annual Meeting of New Champions of the World Economic Forum (also known as the Summer Davos Forum) was held in Tianjin from June 27th to 29th. The "Top Ten Emerging Technologies Report 2023" published by the forum reveals the emerging technologies that will have the greatest impact on the world in the next three to five years.
These ten emerging technologies include flexible batteries, generative artificial intelligence, sustainable aviation fuel, engineering phage, metauniverse for improving mental health, wearable plant sensors, space omics, flexible neuroelectronics, sustainable computing, and artificial intelligence-assisted medical care.
The report pointed out that generative artificial intelligence is a new type of artificial intelligence that generates new original content by learning large-scale data sets, which attracted widespread public attention at the end of 2022 because of the release of ChatGPT. Generative artificial intelligence will lead to subversive changes in many industries such as education and research.
From diagnosis to drug design, artificial intelligence is widely regarded as a promoter of improving medical care. This report focuses on the role of artificial intelligence in supporting the medical system, including monitoring the epidemic situation, assisting decision-making, personalized treatment and improving the efficiency of medical services. Artificial intelligence assisted medical treatment has great potential and will have a far-reaching impact on the medical industry in the next few years.
The report also pointed out that thin flexible batteries made of lightweight materials that can be bent, folded and stretched will soon enter the market. This new generation of battery technology is expected to reach the market value of 240 million US dollars by 2027, and has application prospects in the fields of medical wearable devices, biomedical sensors, flexible display screens and smart watches.
In addition, according to the report, in view of the increasing mental health crisis, product developers are beginning to build shared virtual spaces to improve mental health. In the future, the meta-universe combined with the next generation wearable devices that can make users feel or respond to users’ emotional state can be a good way to improve mental health.
According to reports, the report was jointly selected by a team of experts according to a number of different standards, and qualitatively evaluated the impact of each technology on human beings, the planet, prosperity, industry and social equity. In addition to bringing great social and economic benefits, these technologies must be subversive, attractive to investors and researchers, and are expected to be widely used within five years.
Wu Ruohao, an associate professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, said that many of the top ten emerging technologies involve health, medical care and other fields. These emerging technologies have been applied in medical care and neurology, and will be extended to daily life in the future to improve people’s quality of life.
"We hope that this year’s report will become a powerful tool for business leaders and policy makers to unlock the potential of emerging technologies and shape inclusive adoption." Jiang Ruijie, executive director of the World Economic Forum and general manager of the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center, said.
